The authors study the equation \[ y^{(2n)}(t)+ Ay^{(n)}(t)+ By(t)= 0,\quad t\in\mathbb{R}_+,\quad n\geq 1,\tag{\(*\)} \] where \(A\) and \(B\) are commuting selfadjoint operators in a separable Hilbert space \(H\). They study the behavior of weak solutions to equation \((*)\) as \(t\) tends to infinity. Until recently, this matter was treated mainly for the binomial equation \[ y^{(n)}(t)+ A(t)y(t)= 0,\quad t\in\mathbb{R}_+, \] wherein \(A(t)\) is a bounded operator for every \(t\); the case of unbounded \(A(t)\) was examined only for \(n= 1\) [see \textit{A. Pazy}, Semigroups of linear operators and applications to partial differential equations. Applied Mathematical Sciences, 44. New York etc.: Springer-Verlag (1983; Zbl 0516.47023) and \textit{V. I. Gorbachuk} and \textit{M. L. Gorbachuk}, Boundary value problems for operator differential equations. Mathematics and Its Applications, Sov. Ser. 48. Dordrecht etc.: Kluwer (1991; Zbl 0751.47025)]. Note that the authors consider only those equations for which the Cauchy problem is well posed in a sufficiently wide class of initial data (the hyperbolic case). The investigation is based on the spectral theory of pairs of commuting selfadjoint operators.
