A model for a three-level biological system (plants, herbivores and their predators) is studied, with special attention to the case of prey extinction by over-exploitation of the plants or by the predators. From a complicated, structured model that takes into account local densities, a three-dimensional system of ordinary differential equations is derived. The stability of the system is studied and the existence of several steady-states is demonstrated.
