The authors present several basic results about Fredholm pairs of subspaces introduced by \textit{T. Kato} in [Perturbation theory for linear operators, Berlin: Springer-Verlag (1995; Zbl 0836.47009)] and discuss global geometric and topological properties of associated Grassmannians (called Kato Grassmannians) in a Hilbert space. Relations between several existing definitions of Fredholm pairs are established as well as some basic geometric properties of the Kato Grassmannian. The main result yields that the restricted Grassmannian can be endowed with a natural Fredholm structure making it into a Fredholm Hilbert manifold. They present an explicit construction of Fredholm structures on restricted Grassmannians and they establish the following result: ``The restricted Grassmannian of a polarized Hilbert space has a natural structure of an analytic Fredholm manifold modeleld on the ideal of Hilbert Schmidt operators \(K_{2}(H)\)''.
