A group \(G\) is said to be strongly real if, for every \(g\in G\), there exists an involution \(i\in G\) such that \(g^i=g^{-1}\). The authors prove that the following finite simple groups of Lie type over a field of order \(q\) and sporadic groups are not strongly real: (a) groups of types \(A_l\) (\(l\geq 2\)), \(^2A_l\) (\(l\geq 2\)), \(^2B_2\), \(^2G_2\) for any \(q\); (b) groups of types \(C_l\), \(B_{4l+1}\), \(B_{4l+2}\), \(D_{4l+2}\), \(E_7\) for \(l\geq 1\) and \(q\equiv 3\pmod 4\); (c) groups of type \(D_{2l-1}\) for odd \(q>3\) and \(l\geq 3\); (d) groups of type \(E_6\) for \(q>3\); (e) all sporadic groups except \(J_1\) and \(J_2\).
