The authors construct orthogonal, compactly supported, continuous, bivariate scaling functions on triangulations. The technique of intertwining multiresolution analyses is extended to bivariate functions for that. Two examples are constructed from multiresolution analyses derived from the hat functions supported on \([-1,1]^2\) and the regular hexagonal region centered at \(0\), respectively. The resulting piecewise polynomial scaling functions are well suited to restriction to compact domains. The construction of corresponding orthogonal wavelet bases will follow in a separate paper.
