Consider a compact orientable 3-manifold M, decomposed as the connected sum of prime manifolds \(M_ i\). What can you say about the space Diff(M) of diffeomorphisms of M knowing the spaces \(Diff(M_ i) ?\) The authors answer this question, and show how to compute the weak homotopy type of Diff(M) in terms of the \(Diff(M_ i)\) and of a certain configuration space. A fundamental ingredient of their argument is a disjunction technique developed by \textit{A. Hatcher} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 83, 427-430 (1981; Zbl 0481.57005)].
