The standard polar decomposition of a densely defined closed operator \(B\) on \(H\) is \(B = U|B| = |B^*|U\) (on the domain of \(B\)). The authors study in this paper some generalized and modified polar decompositions, such as \(B = |B^*|^{\alpha}U|B|^{1-\alpha}\) for all \(\alpha\) between \(0\) and \(1\). Some applications to relatively (form) bounded and relatively (form) compact perturbations of selfadjoint operators are also given.
