This paper clarifies a number of issues and challenges regarding a more general periodic orbit approach to coupled map lattices. The authors consider diffusively coupled Chebyshev maps of degree 2 and 3. This paper contains the first steps towards developing a high-dimensional periodic orbit theory, making use of the properties of Chebyshev maps to locate a large number of periodic orbits. When it is possible to achieve a significant precision for the zeta function, the authors compute the average of some string potentials, and then compared the results with direct simulation on the same lattice.
