The authors provide a natural generalization, from the dynamical point of view, of the Poincaré-Hopf theorem to manifolds not necessarily compact (Theorem A). Next, given a compact set \(K\) being an attractor for a flow generated by a \(C^1\) tangent vector field \(X\) on a \(C^2\) \(n\)-dimensional manifold \(M\), the authors prove that the Euler characteristic of its region of attraction \(A\), \(\chi(A)\), is defined and satisfies \(\text{Ind}_A(X)=(-1)^n\chi(A)\). They also prove that \(\chi(A)=\chi(K)\) when \(K\) is a Euclidean neighbourhood retract being asymptotically stable and invariant (Theorem B).
