A Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\) of dimension \(n\) is said to be filiform if \(\dim(\mathfrak{g}/\mathfrak{g}^{k})=k\) for \(2\le k\le n\), where the Lie powers \(\mathfrak{g}^{k}\) are defined recursively as \(\mathfrak{g}^{1}=\mathfrak{g}\), and \(\mathfrak{g}^{k}=[\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{g}^{k-1}]\) for \(k>1\). An \(\mathbb{N}\)-graded Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}=\bigoplus_{i=1}^{\infty} \mathfrak{g}_{i}\) is said to be of maximal class if \(\dim(\mathfrak{g}_{1}) = \dim(\mathfrak{g}_{2}) = 1\), \(\dim(\mathfrak{g}_{i}) \le 1\) for \(i\ge 3\), and \([\mathfrak{g}_{1},\mathfrak{g}_{i}]=\mathfrak{g}_{i+1}\) for \(i \ge 1\). The situation in positive characteristic is much more complicated than the one in characteristic zero. In the paper under review, the authors consider the graded algebra \(\mathfrak{m}_{2}(p)\) with generators \(e_{i}\) of weight \(i\), for \(i\in \mathbb{N}\), defined by the relations \[ [e_{1}, e_{i}] = e_{i+1}, \text{ for }i\ge 2,\quad [e_{2}, e_{i}] = e_{i+2}, \text{ for }i \ge 3, \quad [e_{i}, e_{j}] = 0, \text{ for }i, j \ge 3 \] over a field \(\mathbb{F}\) of characteristic \(p\ge 5\). They show that \(\mathfrak{m}_{2}(p)\) admits a family of restricted Lie algebra structures \(\mathfrak{m}_{2}^{\lambda}(p)\), for \(\lambda \in\mathbb{F}^{p}\). The latter algebras are classified, and their ordinary and restricted cohomology spaces are computed among others. This completes the work done by the authors and \textit{M. Penkava} in [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 144, No. 5, 1877--1886 (2016; Zbl 1397.17022)] and by the authors in [SIGMA, Symmetry Integrability Geom. Methods Appl. 15, Paper 095, 11 p. (2019; Zbl 07170262)], for the modular versions of the other two graded Lie algebras of maximal class in characteristic zero that are of filiform type.
