A notion of multiresolution analysis introduced by S. Mallat in 1986 gives rise to fast wavelet transforms of functions on \(\mathbb{R}\) (or \(\mathbb{R}^ n\)). In 1990, Y. Meyer developed a similar theory on the finite interval \([0,1]\). The present paper contains a construction of multiresolution analysis on \([0,1]\) which is based on a bi-orthogonal formalism commuting with differentiation. New bi-orthogonal systems are well-adapted to the study of Sobolev spaces on \([0,1]\) and are provided through dyadic translations and dilations from a finite number of basic functions.
