A de Branges almost Pontryagin space is a linear subset of all entire functions equipped with an (indefinite) inner product which turns this set into an almost Pontryagin space such that the point evaluation is continuous and some of the standard properties of reproducing kernel spaces are satisfied. Roughly speaking, an almost Pontryagin space differs from a Pontryagin space by a finite-dimensional isotropic part. More precisely, an almost Pontryagin space \((\mathcal H, [\cdot,\cdot ])\) admits a decomposition \[ \mathcal H = \mathcal H_+ [\dotplus] \mathcal H_- [\dotplus] \mathcal H^{\circ}, \] where \((\mathcal H_\pm , \pm [\cdot,\cdot ])\) are Hilbert spaces and \(\mathcal H_-\), \(\mathcal H^{\circ}\) are finite dimensional. The paper answers the question which de Branges almost Pontryagin spaces can be written as the even (odd) part of a symmetric de Branges almost Pontryagin space. Here, symmetry (odd and even) is understood with respect to a mapping \(F(z)\mapsto F(-z)\), where \(F\) stands for an entire function. Moreover, in the present paper, to a given de Branges almost Pontryagin space, all such spaces are described: In the even case, the totality of all such spaces forms a one-parameter family, whereas in the odd case, it is a two-parameter family.
