Let \(X\subset Y(1)^n\) be a variety defined over a number field \(\mathbb{F}\) and let \(V\) be a maximal special subvariety of \(X\). The main result of the paper under review consists in showing that the degree of \(V\) is bounded from above by a constant depending only on the degree of \(X\) and the degree of \(\mathbb{F}\) over \(\mathbb{Q}\). Along with this, more technical results and consequences of similar nature are also presented. The proof follows the approach of \textit{J. Pila} [Ann. Math. (2) 173, No. 3, 1779--1840 (2011; Zbl 1243.14022)], made effective by using results in [\textit{T. Tatuzawa}, Proc. Conf., Tokyo/Jap., Okayama/Jap. and Kyoto/Jap. 1984, 383--416 (1985; Zbl 0622.10029); \textit{G. Binyamini}, Geom. Funct. Anal. 29, No. 1, 72--118 (2019; Zbl 1498.11155)] and a variant of a result by \textit{W. Duke} [Invent. Math. 92, No. 1, 73--90 (1988; Zbl 0628.10029)], whose proof is sketched in the appendix by E. Kowalski.
