Denote \(gg'g^{-1}\) by \(^gg'\). The non-Abelian tensor square \(G\otimes G\) of a group \(G\) is generated by the symbols \(g\otimes h\), \(g,h\in G\), such that \[ gg'\otimes h=({^gg'}\otimes{^gh})(g\otimes h)\quad\text{and}\quad g\otimes hh'=(g\otimes h)({^hg}\otimes{^hh'}). \] The authors prove (Proposition 2.2): If \(G'\) is nilpotent of class \(c\), then \(G\otimes G\) is nilpotent of class \(c\) or \(c+1\). This generalizes an earlier result (with \(G\) instead of \(G'\) nilpotent). The tensor squares of the free 2-Engel group of rank 3 and of the Burnside group of exponent 3 and rank 3 are constructed.
