The paper under review establishes a type decomposition theory for embeddings of a von Neumann algebra into another von Neumann algebra. As an application the author characterizes the subalgebras \(A\) of a von Neumann algebra \(M\) that have an \(n\)- equipartition of the identity, i.e., \(I=\sum_{k=1}^ n p_ k\) where \(p_ k\) are projections in \(A\) which are equivalent in \(M\). From this several applications are obtained.
