It is shown that the dimension of the vector space of primitive Vassiliev knot invariants of degree \(d\) grows at least as \(d^{\log d}\), and in particular faster than any polynomial in \(d\). A short introduction to the history of such upper and lower bounds is given in the introduction of the paper [\textit{A. Stoimenov}, J. Knot Theory Ramifications 8, No.~6, 799-813 (1999; Zbl 0934.57007), see also the next review], recent improvements of the above lower bound are reported on in the Notes added in proof of the present paper.
