The authors consider a piecewise smooth autonomous system of differential equations for which the phase space is split into several disjoint regions such that the system is smooth in each of the regions, has there a hyperbolic saddle, and there is a heteroclinic orbit joining these saddles and transverse to the switching manifolds. They apply the Battelli-Fečkan method [\textit{F. Battelli} and \textit{M. Fečkan}, J. Dyn. Differ. Equations 23, No. 3, 495--540 (2011; Zbl 1234.34029)] to construct a family of Melnikov-type functions related to the heteroclinic orbit. They give sufficient conditions under which a time-perturbed system exhibits chaotic behavior.
