The authors have investigated the performance of two mathematical models which describe excitations in a three-dimensional block representing an isotropic cardiac tissue. The first model is characterized by a reaction- diffusion system while the second one is derived from the first by a perturbation technique. It is characterized by an eikonal equation and it is found that it provides a reliable and numerically efficient model for the excitation process.
