The author investigates the stability of steady flows of multi-mode nonlinear Maxwell fluids. He proves that a flow is linearly stable (that is, stable in the linear approximation) if and only if the spectrum of the operator corresponding to the linearized equation is in the open left half plane and, in addition, an auxiliary coupled system of ordinary differential equations associated with short wave asymptotics is stable.
