Let $(X, \| \cdot\|)$ be a Banach space and $(\|\cdot\|_i)_{i \in A}$ be a family of equivalent norms on $X$ with unit ball $B_i$. Denote by $B_i^{oo}$ the bipolar set of $B_i$. The space $X$ is said to have the general intersection property $(GI)$ if, for any family of equivalent norms $(\|\cdot\|_i)_{i \in A}$ such that $B_X= \bigcap_{i \in A} B_i$, then $B_{X^{**}}= \bigcap_{i \in A} B_i^{oo}$. In the case that the property holds only for countable families of norms, we say that $X$ has the intersection property $(I)$. Relations between $(I)$ and $(GI)$ are studied; i.e., the two properties coincide if $X$ is separable or w$^*$-sequentially dense in its bidual. A characterization of reflexivity in terms of $(I)$ and $(GI)$ is also given (every equivalent norm on $X$ has property $(I)$). Those properties are studied in $C(K)$ spaces: $C(K)$ has the $(GI)$ property if and only if $K$ is finite. Under a suitable condition on $K$ (for example, $K$ zero dimensional), $C(K)$ has $(I)$ if and only if every nonempty $G_\delta$ subset of $K$ has nonempty interior. Other related properties are also studied.
