A matrix \(M\) is called controllable if for some permutation matrix \(P\), \(PMP^ T\) has \((i,j)\) entry at least as large as \((j,i)\) entry for \(i\) greater than \(j\). The author gives an algorithm to reduce controllable matrices to canonical form.
