Consider a class of nonlinear dynamic systems described by ODEs in the state space. The paper deals with the use of high gain observers for disturbance attenuation as well as fault detection under disturbances for this class of systems. Two cases of disturbance attenuation are presented. They differ in particular restrictions on the system's structure. These results are applied to robust residual generation, where a fault model is appended to the original system. Different types of faults are allowed. Two illustrative examples of simulations of fault detection under different faults are supplied.
