The paper provides an algebraic approach to the theoretical foundations of fuzzy sets based on linear order structure. It is argued that the lattice structure only is not able to establish an appropriate framework to cover aspects, such as repetitivity and negativity, which frequently arise when the incertitude is modeled in terms of fuzzy sets and relations. As an alternative, a structure of linear ordered space is considered on the space of extended fuzzy sets, where the membership functions are assumed to take values of the interval \([-1,1]\). Some interesting features of this particular kind of structuring are pointed out, aiming to justify that such a framework allows a better theoretical treatment of fuzzy incertitude.
