Following \textit{F. Borceux} et al. [Commentat. Math. Univ. Carol. 46, No. 2, 235--255 (2005; Zbl 1121.18004)] the authors study a general theory of extensions of objects in categories. In case of the category of groups a central extension \(U\) of \(Y\) is universal if and only if the first and second group homology with values in the integers is trivial. In previous work \textit{J. M. Casas Miras} and the second author [Appl. Categ. Struct. 22, No. 1, 253--268 (2014; Zbl 1358.18005)] defined in semi-abelian categories the universal central extension condition UCE, which is that whenever \(B\) is a perfect object, and \(A\) is a central extension of \(B\) and \(B\) is a central extension of \(C\), then \(A\) is also a central extension of \(C\). In the present work the authors prove that a semi-abelian category also has UCE if the category is peri-abelian in the sense of \textit{D. Bourn} [The cohomological comparison arising from the associated abelian object, \url{arXiv:1001.0905}].
