The authors consider a cylindrical liquid column of incompressible and inviscid fluid of finite length, subjected to axial harmonic excitation, under zero gravity. Assuming that the liquid performs an irrotational motion, they obtain the equations of the problem, taking into account the terms of the third order with respect to the displacement of the free surface in the expression of its mean curvature. At first, they study the linear liquid response and obtain the velocity potential, the displacement of the free surface and the fluid velocity by means of series containing the modified Bessel functions. In the more complex nonlinear case, the series for the velocity potential and the displacement of the free surface contain coefficients depending on the time, which are determined by a nonlinear inhomogeneous system of ordinary differential equations. The authors search only for its harmonic solutions, using the Ritz averaging method. Numerical calculations for special parameters of the system are discussed. The following results are obtained: the liquid column exhibits softening behavior and there exists a jump-phenomenon below resonance.
