The main result: For \(1\leq p\leq \infty\) and \(k\geq 1\) we have \(\kappa^{t^*}_{k,p}\leq 2^{k+1}\), where \(t^*\) denotes a sequence of extremal knots [for definitions see e.g. \textit{L. L. Schumaker}, Spline functions: basic theory (1981; Zbl 0449.41004)].
