The book treats analytical methods for the solution of optimal design problems for continuous media. Special attention is given to a model problem arising in heat conduction in a body with different heat conduction properties. The problem is to find optimal distributions of different materials, having different heat conduction properties so that, when the body is used for thermal isolation, the dissipated energy is as small as possible. Of course, other engineering problems of the same type can be treated similarly. The relaxation and sub-relaxation methods are used for optimization. The nonlinear problems are also treated, and a direct computational method is introduced. The book is intended for graduate students in engineering, analysis and applied mathematics.
