By a vector addition theorem is understood an equation of the form \(F(f(x), \varphi (y),\psi (x + y)) = 0\), where \(f(x) = (f_ 1(x), \dots, f_ N(x))\), \(\varphi (y) = (\varphi_ 1 (y), \dots,\varphi_ N (y))\), \(\psi (z) = (\psi_ 1(z), \dots, \psi_ N(z))\) are vector functions, and \(F\) is a function of \(3N\) variables. In particular, the classical Cauchy functional equation \(\psi (x + y) = \psi (x) \psi (y)\) completely characterizes the exponential \(\psi (x) = \exp (kx)\), where \(k\) is a parameter. In this paper it is shown that for \(N=2\) the general analytic solution of these equations is determined by the Baker-Akhiezer functions of an algebraic curve of genus 2. It is also shown that \(\theta\)-functions give solutions of a Cauchy equation of rank \(N\) for functions of a \(q\)- dimensional argument with \(N \leq 2^ q\) in the case of a general \(q\)- dimensional Abelian variety and \(N \leq q\) in the case of a Jacobi variety of an algebraic curve of genus \(q\). It is conjectured that a Cauchy functional equation of rank \(q\) for a function of a \(q\)-dimensional argument is characteristic for \(\theta\)- functions of a Jacobi variety of an algebraic curve of genus \(q\), i.e., solves the Riemann-Schottky problem.
