The authors prove a criterion for boundedness of solutions of difference equations of Poincaré type when the characteristic polynomial is a simple von Neumann polynomial, that is, all roots have modulus less than or equal to one and those with modulus one are simple. This criterion is then used in the stability analysis of multistep quadrature methods for Volterra integral equations of the second kind.
