A topological space \(X\) is said to have property \(pp\) if every open cover \({\mathcal U}\) of \(X\) has an open refinement \({\mathcal V}\) with the property that for every mapping \(x:{\mathcal V}\to X\) such that \(x(V)=x_V \in V\) for each \(V\in{\mathcal V}\) the family \((\{x_V\})_{V\in{\mathcal V}}\) is locally finite. This property was introduced by \textit{M. V. Matveev} in [Quest. Answers Gen. Topology 15, No. 2, 103--111(1997; Zbl 1002.54016)]. Obviously, every paracompact space has property \(pp\). This paper is addressed to the question under which circumstances spaces with property \(pp\) are paracompact. Theorem 1. Every \(q\)-space with property \(pp\) is paracompact. In particular, every first countable space with property \(pp\) is paracompact, a fact which was also shown by \textit{Y. Song} [ibid. 21, No. 1, 75--77 (2003; Zbl 1023.54021)]. Theorem 2. Every regular lob-space with property \(pp\) is paracompact. Theorem 3. (CH) Every separable regular space with property \(pp\) is Lindelöf, hence paracompact. Theorem 4. Every locally countably compact space with property \(pp\) is paracompact. Theorem 5. Every monotonically normal space with property pp is paracompact. However, the authors also provide several examples which show that in general spaces with property \(pp\) are far away from being paracompact. Example 1. There exists a normal, metacompact, paraLindelöf, collectionwise Hausdorff space with property \(pp\) which is not collectionwise normal, hence not paracompact. Example 2. There exists a perfectly normal space with property \(pp\) which is neither collectionwise Hausdorff nor metacompact, hence not paracompact. Example 3. There exists a perfectly normal metacompact space with property \(pp\) which is not collectionwise Hausdorff, hence not paracompact. Example 4. There exists a regular space with property \(pp\) which is not even countably metacompact! Additionally it is shown that property \(pp\) is preserved by regular \(F_\sigma\)-subsets and that closed images of topological spaces with property \(pp\) have property \(pp\).
