The authors examine stability problems that arise when operator splitting is used to compute numerical solution of certain systems of partial differential equations. It is shown that if the splitting is inexact, then the equations that model the slow motion might actually contain some fast components, so that stability of explicit algorithm for slow equations could come into doubt. Some numerical experiments have been made for illustration.
