Let \(\mathcal D\) be a bounded symmetric domain in a finite dimensional linear space \(E\). Denote by \(K\subset G L(E)\) the identity component of the group \( G L(\mathcal D)\) associated to \(D\), and by \(S\) the semisimple part of \(K\). The authors investigate the CR geometry of the \(K\) and \(S\) orbits \(M\) in \(E\), in particular their CR and linear equivalence and their realization as the boundary of a domain in a suitable complex analytic Stein space. They also compute the spectrum of the Banach algebra of CR continuous functions on \(M\) and determine the linear, polynomial and rational convex hulls of \(M\) in \(E\). \quad The discussion specializes into a detailed discussion for the different classes of bounded symmetric domains, and utilizes a Jordan algebra approach. Reviewer's remark: This paper contains a lot of new and interesting results, especially because it deals with properties of CR manifolds of arbitrary CR codimension. For the hypersurface case, as it is pointed out by the authors, some of the questions they investigate had already been treated in [\textit{F. R. Harvey} and \textit{H. B. Lawson jun.}, Ann. Math. (2) 102, 223-290 (1975; Zbl 0317.32017)].
