1D wave equations written as Hamiltonian (or Poisson) system with Hamiltonian H are considered. Travelling wave solutions can often be found if the system is translationally invariant. When dissipation is added to the system, these travelling waves are no longer exact solutions. This effect of dissipation is investigated by looking for solutions in a neighbourhood of the travelling wave surface, i.e. for solutions of the form \(u(t)=U(\gamma (t),\phi (t))+\eta (t)\) where \(\eta\) is ``small''. Equations for the evolution of the parameters \(\gamma\) and \(\phi\) are derived. These equations provide a two-dimensional approximate description of the system: u(t) is approximated by a dissipative trajectory in the two-dimensional travelling wave surface. This work combines two different methods that are well-known. First, for completely integrable systems, and the others using to perform a perturbation analysis around the special solution of the conservative part.
