It is shown that the special case of the inverse additive eigenvalue problem as considered by \textit{D. Teng} [Linear Algebra Appl. 139, 63-65 (1990; Zbl 0708.15004)] cannot be solved over the complex field, if only a finite number of arithmetic operations and \(k\)-th roots are allowed. For this, the authors construct an explicit counterexample of dimension 5, which is mainly based on the theory of symmetric functions and on Galois theory.
