\textit{F. Borceux} and \textit{M. C. Pedicchio} [J. Algebra 139, 505-526 (1991; Zbl 0737.18003)] characterized categories of separated objects for Lawvere-Thierney topologies on Grothendieck toposes. The present pleasant paper gives ``finitary'' versions of this for topologies on pretoposes and for topologies on abelian categories.
