The authors investigate algebraic structures related to nonlinear evolution equations. Specifically, they consider the AKNS spectral problem in the form \(L\varphi=\lambda\varphi\) and give a modified definition of the associated Lax operator as a polynomial in \(L\). The main theorem states that the linear space of all Lax operators is an infinite dimensional Lie algebra under a suitably defined Lie product.
