An improvement is proposed of the Chawla-Numerov (CW) two-step method [see \textit{M. M. Chawla}, BIT 24, 117-118 (1984; Zbl 0568.65042)] for solving the initial value problem \(y''=f(x,y)\); \(y(x_ 0)=y_ 0\), \(y'(x_ 0)=y'_ 0\). The local error of both schemes is \(O(h^ 6)\) but the improvement has phase-lag of order 6 while the CW method has 4-th order phase lag.
