The authors study the problem of determination of material constants of a layered composite by using one-dimensional elastic waves generated by an external source. A hybrid numerical method is used to solve the direct problem. The inversion algorithm designed to determine the material constants of a laminate is based upon the genetic algorithm (GA) scheme. The procedure is tested by adding Gaussian noise to the response. The numerical verification is performed on glass/epoxy and carbon/epoxy laminates.
