Based on the state of stress (the state at which a localized thinning of the sheet occurs during the forming, leading to a split in the sheet), the author proposes a forming limit criterion for sheet metal forming for both proportional and non-proportional loading. This criterion is validated using data for aluminium and steel alloys reported in the literature.
