A characteristic one-dimensional singular integral equation in an unbounded domain is considered. To solve that equation direct and projective methods are suggested. In this connection, the problem of choice of an optimal in certain sense algorithm for the approximate solution of the equation becomes actual. The author suggests a solution of the problem using results concerning the general theory of approximation methods and the theory of the widths of compact sets.
