For a dynamical system consisting of the Einstein tensor, a minimally coupled scalar field and possibly several Yang-Mills fields, the authors look for the stability property of Kasner-like solutions. The Maxwell field is considered as special case of a Yang-Mills field. The work is done for a general \(D\)-dimensional space, and it turns out, that \(D=11\) represents a threshold for criticality. The analysis distinguishes between monotoneous and oscillatory behaviour, e.g., in the approach to the cosmic singularity. Concerning the criticality, the dimensionless dilaton coupling parameter \(\lambda_c\) plays the essential role in the discussion.
