The study is concerned with the nonlinear dynamics of hanging and standing cantilevered elastic pipes conveying incompressible fluid. After eliminating the nonlinearities in the inertial terms by means of the perturbation technique, Galerkin's approach is applied in order to obtain ODEs. Dependent on the flow velocity, different kinds of bifurcations (pitchfork, Hopf, periodic motions) occur including double degeneracy. Additionally, the qualitative dynamics is studied for the case where a pulsatile component is present in the flow. Numerical results demonstrate the existence of chaos due to subharmonic bifurcations within the heteroclinic loop, and heteroclinic bifurcations for both steady and pulsatile flow. They confirm partly the analytical predictions.
