Subnormal contractions \(S\) on a Hilbert space \({\mathcal H}\) are characterized by conditions concerning the sequences \(\{\| S^nf\|\}\) for \(f\in{\mathcal H}\), such as \[ \sum^n_{i,j=0}\| S^{i+j+1} f\|^2\,\lambda_i\overline\lambda_j\leq \sum^n_{i,j=0}\| S^{i+j} f\|^2\,\lambda_i\overline\lambda_j \] for \(n\geq 0\), \(f\in{\mathcal H}\), \(\lambda_0,\dots,\lambda_n\in \mathbb{C}\). A linear operator \(T\) in \({\mathcal H}\) is called completely hyperexpansive if \[ \sum^n_{p=0}(- 1)^p{n\choose p}\| T^p f\|^2\leq 0 \] for \(n= 1,2,\dots\) and \(f\in{\mathcal D}^\infty(T)\). By means of the reverse of the above inequality, equivalent conditions for a bounded linear operator to be completely hyperexpansive is given. Semispectral representations of subnormal contractions and completely hyperexpansive operators are established. As examples, weighted shifts are investigated in this setting.
