Recall that a free filter \(\mathcal{F}\) on the set \(\mathbb{N}\) of natural numbers is said to be a \(P\)-filter if for every decreasing sequence \((A_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}\) in \(\mathcal{F}\) there is some \(B\in \mathcal{F}\) such that \(B\setminus A_n\) is finite for every \(n\in \mathbb{N}\) and \(\mathcal{F}\) is called a \(Q\)-filter if for every partition \((X_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}\) of \(\mathbb{N}\) into finite sets there is some \(B\in \mathcal{F}\) such that \(B\cap X_n\) has at most one element for each \(n\in \mathbb{N}\). The authors give characterisations of \(P\)- and \(Q\)-filters in terms of convergence along filters in the space \(\ell^1\) and in arbitrary Banach spaces with Schauder basis. For example, they prove that a free filter \(\mathcal{F}\) on \(\mathbb{N}\) is a \(P\)-filter if and only if every sequence \((x_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}\) in \(\ell^1\) that is weakly convergent to zero along \(\mathcal{F}\) contains a subsequence \((x_{n_k})_{k\in \mathbb{N}}\) such that \(\{n_k:k\in \mathbb{N}\}\in \mathcal{F}\) and \((x_{n_k})_{k\in \mathbb{N}}\) is pointwise convergent to zero, and if and only if the latter statement holds for all sequences in an arbitrary (fixed) Banach space \(X\) with a fixed Schauder basis \((e_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}\) (where pointwise convergence is replaced by convergence under all corresponding coefficient-functionals \(e_n^*\)). The characterisation of \(Q\)-filters involves small perturbations of block basic sequences. Analogous characterisations for the weaker notions of \(P\)-\(\text{filters}^+\) and weak \(P\)-filters resp. \(Q\)-\(\text{filters}^+\) and weak \(Q\)-filters are also obtained. Furthermore, selective and \(\text{selective}^+\) filters are characterised as well. Finally, the authors characterise the Schur filters (i. e., the free filters on \(\mathbb{N}\) for which the statement of the classical Schur theorem in \(\ell^1\) holds, these filters where introduced in [\textit{A. Avilés-Lopéz, B. Cascales-Salinas, V. Kadets} and \textit{A. Leonov}, ``The Schur \(\ell^1\) theorem for filters'', J. Math. Phys. Anal. Geom. 3, No. 4, 383--398 (2007)]) in terms of decompositions of the unit ball of \(\ell^{\infty}\).
