The author determines for an arbitrary division ring D the irreducible subgroups of SL(n,D) generated by root subgroups. This extends work of \textit{J. McLaughlin}, who settled the case where D is a field [see Arch. Math. 18, 364-368 (1967; Zbl 0232.20084) and Ill. J. Math. 13, 108-115 (1969; Zbl 0179.049)].
