Let \(M\) be compact and \(f:M \to N\) a totally geodesic isometric immersion. Then \(f\) is stable for the functional \(\int \| df \|^ p\) for \(p \geq 2+ \dim M\) iff \(f\) is stable as a minimal immersion. The authors give several applications -- mostly for maps between compact symmetric spaces.
