Let \(A\) be a Noetherian ring, \(M\) a finitely generated \(A\)-module and \(I \subset A\) an ideal. If \(I\) is the unique maximal ideal of~\(A\), then the local cohomology module \(H_I^p(M)\) is Artinian. Also \(H_I^p(M)\) is Artinian if \(A\) is a graded ring, \(M\) is a graded \(A\)-module and \(I\) is the homogeneous maximal ideal. However, we have little knowledge of local cohomology in general. In the present paper, the authors study Bass numbers of \(H_I^p(M)\) if \(A\) is a graded ring, \(M\) is a graded \(A\)-module and \(I\) is a non-maximal homogeneous ideal. They show that all the Bass numbers of \(H_I^p(M)\) are finite if \(A\) is a simplicial semigroup ring and \(I\) is an arbitrary homogeneous ideal. Conversely, this property characterizes simplicial semigroup rings.
