Eine stetige Funktion \(F(t) = U(t) + iV(t)\), \(-\infty < t < \infty\), besitzt eine mittlere Bewegung \(\mu\), falls sie in die Form \(F(t)=r(t) \exp\, (2\pi i \varPhi(t))\) gebracht werden kann, worin \(r(t)\) und \(\varPhi(t)\) reellwertige Funktionen sind und \(\varPhi(t) = \mu t+o(t)\). Gegenstand der Untersuchung ist die Frage nach der Existenz von \(\mu\). Es sind in dieser Richtung schon einige Tatsachen bekannt, z. B. hat \textit{H. Bohr} gezeigt, daß \(\varPhi(t) = \mu t+\omega(t)\) mit fastperiodischem \(\omega(t)\) gilt, falls \(F(t)\) fastperiodisch ist und der Null nicht beliebig nahe kommt (Danske Vid. Selsk. mat.-fysiske Medd. 10 (1930), Nr. 10, 12; F.~d.~M. 56\(_{\text{II}}\), 934). Verf. betrachtet eine analytische fastperiodische Funktion \[ f(s)=f(\sigma+it)=F_{\sigma}(t) \qquad (\alpha<\sigma<\beta) \] und bringt die Existenz von \(\mu=\mu(\sigma)\) von \(F_{\sigma}(t)\) in Zusammenhang mit der Nullstellenverteilung von \(f(s)\). Es ergibt sich, daß \(\mu(\sigma)\) für alle die \(\sigma\) existiert, für welche die zu \(f(s)\) gehörige Jensensche Funktion \(\psi(\sigma)\) differenzierbar ist, und zwar gilt \[ \mu=\mu(\sigma)=\frac{\psi'(\sigma)}{2\pi}. \] Bekanntlich ist \[ \psi'(\beta')-\psi'(\alpha')=2\pi H (\alpha', \beta') \] ein Maß für die Häufigkeit der Nullstellen im Streifen \(\alpha', \beta'\). Falls \[ f(s)=\sum_{k=1}^{n} a_k\, \exp\,(2\pi(\lambda_k s+i\alpha_k)), \] so besitzen alle entsprechenden \(F_{\sigma}(t)\), mit möglicherweise endlichviel Ausnahmen, eine mittlere Bewegung. Unter gewissen einfachen Bedingungen können auch die erwähnten Ausnahmen nicht mehr auftreten. -- Falls die \(\lambda_k\) linear unabhängig sind, ist \(\mu(\sigma)\) eine regulär analytische Funktion bei jedem \(\sigma\), für das keine Relation \[ \sum_{k=1}^{n} e_k \, a_k\, \exp\,(2\pi \lambda_k \sigma)=0 \] Gültigkeit hat mit \(e_k = \pm1\). Für \(\zeta(s)\) ergibt sich für \(\sigma>\frac{1}{2}\), daß \(\mu(\sigma)\) existiert und identisch Null ist.
