Let \({\mathcal P}\) be the interior of a parabola of the complex plane, and let \(A\) be a continuous linear operator on a complex Hilbert space \(H\) such that the numerical range \(W(A)=\{(Ax, x): x\in H, \| x\| =1\}\) of \(A\) satisfies \(W(A)\subset {\overline{\mathcal P}}\). The aim of this paper is to show that there exists a constant \(C_p\leq 4.75\) such that the inequality \(\| r(A)\| \leq C_p\sup_{z\in{\mathcal P}}| r(z)| \) holds for all rational functions \(r\) bounded in \({\mathcal P}\), all continuous linear operators \(A\) with numerical range \(W(A)\subset{\overline{\mathcal P}}\), all Hilbert spaces \(H\) and all parabolas \({\mathcal P}\). Moreover, the author shows that, adding suitable assumptions, this inequality is still valid for unbounded operators and for all functions \(r\) which are holomorphic in \({\mathcal P}\), and continuous and bounded in \({\overline{\mathcal P}}\).
