The authors consider a problem of extending a weight structure \(w\) for a triangulated category \({\underline C}\) to its idempotent completion \({\mathrm{Kar}}({\underline C}).\) More generally they consider the question when \(w\) can be extended to some full triangulated subcategory \({\underline C}'\supset {\underline C}\) of \({\mathrm{Kar}}({\underline C}).\) \({\underline C}'\) is called the idempotent extension of \({\underline C}\)) The main theorem of the paper is a significant improvement of the former result of the first author (cf. [\textit{M. V. Bondarko}, J. \(K\)-Theory 6, No. 3, 387--504 (2010; Zbl 1303.18019)], Proposition 5.2.2). The authors describe a new method of construction of weight structure \(w\) on a triangulated category \({\underline C}\). Using this construction a new description of triangulated categories containing \({\underline C}\) as a dense subcategory to which \(w\) extends is given. One of the assertions of the main theorem is that any bounded above or below \(w\) extends to any idempotent extension of \({\underline C}.\) The authors give an example that such a \(w\) does not extend in general to the idempotent completion of \({\underline C}.\) An application of the results to certain triangulated categories of relative motives is also described.
